Hunan University is situated at the foot of the picturesque Yuelu Mountain and on the west bank of the rippling Xingjian River in the historically and culturally renowned City of Changsha, capital of Hunan Province. It enjoys the title of an “Ancient Millenarian Academy, Famous Centennial University”. As one of the key and most comprehensive universities affiliated with the Ministry of Education, it has been included in the state’s “Project 211” and “Project 985” for priority investment and construction. Professor Liu Keli is the Party Secretary of the CPC Hunan University Committee and Professor Zhao Yueyu the President of this highly reputed institute. The University has Graduate School and 23 colleges and departments. Professional disciplines involve 11 subject categories, such as philosophy, economics, law, education, literature, history, science, engineering, management, medicine and arts, which offer 25 first-order disciplines authorized to confer Ph.D. degrees, 41 first-orders

Hunan University is also known as the “One Thousand Year Old University”, thanks to its incredible longevity. Developed from the Yuelu Academy founded in 976 AD, Hunan University is China’s oldest higher education institution.

Hunan University is part of both “Project 211” and “Project 985”, two of the Chinese government’s main investment projects in higher education. The university has been state-run since 1937.

For much of the 20th Century, the university was primarily a technology and engineering university. Around 30 of its alumni have gone on to become members of either the Chinese Academy of Science or the Chinese Academy of Engineering. Most of the programmes in the engineering department can be studied in English.

In the 2000s the university broadened its curriculum to offer a comprehensive range of subjects. The university now has 23 colleges and departments, as well as the Graduate School.

Hunan University’s motto is “Seeking Truth from Facts; Daring to be Pioneers”.

The university campus features ponds, trees and numerous species of flowers, with several buildings in the traditional style of the region. Against the backdrop of the surrounding hills it looks like a Chinese painting.

The university is located in Changsha, capital of the Hunan Province. The region is known as the home of Wulingyuan Mountain and of Mao Zedong.

Chairman Mao Zedong, one of the founding fathers of the People’s Republic of China, inscribed the name of the University in 1950.

Hunan University is a comprehensive and well-coordinated university featuring studies in engineering, with a strong foundation in science, a unique cultural background in liberal arts and its own characteristics in economics and management. Hunan University, affiliated with the Ministry of Education of China, is included in China’s “211 Project” and “985 Project” for priority investment and construction. It has 30 colleges and departments, offering 12 first-order disciplines authorized to confer Ph.D. degrees, 69 second-order disciplines authorized to confer Ph.D. degrees, 171 master programs, 7 academic degree authorizations, 61 undergraduate programs, and 15 post-doctoral research centers. The programs cover 10 classes of disciplines ranging from philosophy, economics, laws, pedagogy, literature, history, to natural sciences, engineering sciences, management, and medicine.
